IMAGE: Finn Slough in 4×5

June 4, 2010 by , under image.

I’ve been scanning some film recently as I wanted to follow up on this post comparing a few aesthetic things between my Nikon D3x and my Hasselblad film camera (which I will have a post on soon). The process though led me to a bunch of 4×5 and 6×7 film projects I’d shot back in 2004/’05 that I’d never gotten around to scanning. This shot is of Finn Slough, which is a very cool old fishing community built where the Fraser River meets the Pacific. Shot on 4×5 Fuji Provia 100.

From a series I started last summer but never really finished (here). As the weather gets nicer here in Vancouver I’m hoping to find some time amidst the commercial work to pursue a few different personal projects I have floating around in my head (as well as finish off a couple of the ones already underway)… so stay tuned.

April 12, 2010 by , under image.

I’ve had a busy week. Sometimes after a stretch of commercial shoots I don’t have a whole lot left in the creative tank to get out and shoot personal work. I drove past this bus station a number of times before I finally pulled over and took pictures. There was no real setup for these shots so they only took a moment, and in the end I came away with way more creative energy than I had when I started. It was like the creative equivalent to jogging – you feel too tired to go, but you know you’ll feel so much better afterward.

Architectural photography has been part of my business almost since the beginning and has taught me more about lighting than any other kind of photography I do. It’s a game of balancing light levels, color temperatures and time of day.

A dedicated collection has been added on the website which you can check out here .

IMAGE: Nothin’ But Blue Skies

February 26, 2010 by , under image.

These are a few images I shot one evening along the banks of the Fraser River – all within a couple hours and a couple steps of each other. They show some of the variety of skies you can get when shooting during that window of twilight.

Shooting at the edges of day has been (and continues to be) a big part of my image making, both in personal work and in the much of the commercial work that I do. I was approached awhile back by David duChemin of Pixelated Image to write an ebook on the topic – and the resulting book has just gone live at his ebook site Craft&Vision (costs about the same as a canadian pint of beer).

Found a fur coat and some snow over the holidays… so we made a picture.

Also happy 2010 everyone, a couple notes as we start the new year.

1. The new site is up and running.
2. For those who follow this blog using an rss reader I must apologize; the rss feed was changed with the launch of the new website and i didn’t give you a heads up. I hope you find this note and head here to update your feed.
3. January always comes with much planning and scheming for the future – the results of which should see this blog becoming more and more active with various projects I have on the go… so stay tuned!

A couple abstracts from my China travels. The mailboxes were shot in Hunan Province in 2008, and the high rise windows in Hong Kong this past September.
